More about the Sealyham Terrier.

Quite recently I referred to the merits of the above-named Terrier as a worker, and to the fact that a club had been formed with a view to furthering the interests of the breed. I am now  able, through the kindness of Messrs. Lewis and Gwyther, Mariner´s Hotel, Haverfodwest, to give readers an illustration of what a typical Sealyham Terrier is like in the flesh. The dog depicted is their now very well-known Tinker, considered by those best capable of passing an opinion one of the - if not  the - best of this famous strain of working Terriers. As  a glance at the illustration will show, the dog looks a worker. Tinker is of the correct stamp, stands on very short and straight strong legs, has a good body, and possesses the kind of hard coat so much admired in the Wire-haired Fox-Terrier. Tinker has qualified as a worker with both fox and badger, and has, moreover , proved most successful in the show-ring whenever exhibited.

At one time there were many who objected to the dog on the score that it would not breed to type. This objection no longer holds good, and the Sealyham , if properly selected, will breed as true to type as any other Terrier. The strain is no new one, its admirers claiming for it a history of at least a century. There seems an undoubted and genuine demand for this Terrier, and I shall be much deceived if it does not ere long occupy a still more prominent position among Terriers than it does today.

The Sealyham Terrier.

Dear Sire, - Will you tell me what a “Sealyham Terrier” is? Are there any special characteristics of colour,  coat, size, build,  temper, &c., of the breed; also why is it so named?

The Sealyham Terrier is one of those strains of Terriers identified with a particular individual. It takes its name from Sealyham, the seat of the Edwardes family, near Haverfordwest. In really it is a Fox-Terrier, though very different in conformation from the long-legged, narrow-chested animal that everyone is familiar with nowadays. There are several different strains of Terriers named after individuals - Parson Russell, for instance - that are renowned for their working capabilities.
